Firebase Studio : It is not ready yet

I read Addy Osmani’s announcement on LinkedIn, and wanted to give it a try myself.

Coming from Google, I had high hopes.

As per Google, it is improved version of, and will replace Project IDX.

While I have not used Project IDX in past, Firebase Studio looks like hosted VS Code.

As soon as you “login”, you get two options.

First to create a brand new application, and other to import your existing repo.

The demo shows the first flow - creating new app.

I didn’t want to try that. Instead, I tried this on my existing repo.

Importing repo worked without hitch. 1

But several people in the discussion forum reported errors importing repo.

While I had no error importing, I couldn’t type anything in the Gemini pane, to give instructions. No cursor where I would type, just one big empty white pane.

Main feature of AI IDE is to be able to interact with AI (Gemini in this case) Since I couldn’t interact with Gemini, trying this was a non-starter.

It looks like Google released it too early 😞

Maybe I’ll again later in a few weeks.

Till then I’ll stick to #WindSurf by Codeium

  1. It was a public repo, so no auth issues. ↩︎
