Hyprland on Mint
Ever since I read (and watched videos) about Omarchy I so wanted to try it. As I mentioned, the ISO directly wants to install it on the machine. There is no live - try before you install - option. So I didn’t.
I wanted the next best thing.
Try Hyprland with disturbing the cart too much.
Why not try setting it with Linux Mint that I’m already using ?
Reddit forums were discouraging.
Everyone said, it (i.e. Hyprland) works best with bleeding edge distro like Arch (Omarchy is based in Arch) and Debian/Ubuntu (and thus Mint) have too old dependencies.
But someone pointed to Ubuntu Hyprland
The 24.04 branch is closest to Mint 22.1 that I have.
Although the installer mentions that this version has reached end-of-support in July 2025, I went ahead and tried it.
Installer initially mentioned that light-dm is running, so I logged out of the
GUI DE, and ran the installer script from tty1
(It still said the same 😄)
Installer went on to install a whole lot of stuff, but luckily no errors.
At the end it said, start Hyprland by entering the command Hyprland
from
the terminal. So I did.
Lo and Behold!
It worked.
Quite nicely.
Off course there are quirks. (which means the config needs tweaking 😄)
After initial glimpse, I logged out.
I realized that I get Hyprland as one of the option (along with Cinnamon) on the Login screen.
🤯
I’m back to Cinnamon, and I shall explore/fix Hyprland in coming days.
